A two by two matrix for working out what to do with feedback

Getting feedback can be an awkward and sometimes painful experience (giving it can be even worse!).

Whenever you’re on the receiving end it can be helpful to ask yourself: “What can I do with this?”

It’s not just about figuring out what has/hasn’t succeeded, it’s also about choosing if and how to react.

This model helps categorize feedback you receive (and helps to frame how you give it) so you can decide:

1. What advice do you want to follow?
2. Which criticisms to you want to act on?
3. What suggestions will you ignore?


Pay attention to your thoughts, because they become words.
Pay attention to your words, because they become actions…
